Ide Hill comes from the Old English ‘hyll’ meaning a ‘hill’ combined with a personal
name; therefore, ‘Edith’s hill’.
Ide Hill church is dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin, and built in 1865, replacing
an earlier chapel constructed by the Bishop of London, in 1807. The shingled spire
had a bell hung in 1865.
